Tutorial: Changing the Bird Block on a Quartz Cuckoo

Warning: All the manipulations that we describe below must be done with care and delicacy. We cannot be held responsible for any damage. These instructions are intended to help people who cannot come directly to the store with their cuckoo clock!

Please note that we do not offer any email support regarding cuckoo issues.

When handling the cuckoo clock, be sure to always grip it by the roof, or by the rear of the case! not by the sculptures.

Path to follow

Required material: A Phillips or flathead screwdriver, and a little love for DIY.

Foreword: For reasons of space, in most clocks we need to remove the battery pack to be able to remove the bird unit (However if the clock is very large it is possible to remove the bird unit without having to remove the battery pack. )

Electronic Cuckoo Movement (Quartz)
Battery pack

Start by removing the batteries:

Remove both needles, pulling them firmly at the axis:

Then remove the doors of the cuckoo, starting by gently pulling the top of the door, and then the bottom:

Clear the doors of their respective hooks:

Once the two doors are removed, unscrew the two screws that hold the frame of the window of the cuckoo:

Remove the 4 screws (or only 2 sometimes) that hold the battery pack:

Carefully remove the plug connecting the bird block to the battery pack (it is noted normally under this one IBRD) It is necessary topress below with a flat screwdriver to release the plug:

Also remove the plug connecting the battery pack to the side ON / OFF switch:

Here we are with the empty clock:

Now position the new bird unit in its housing and screw it back on the front with the window frame (hold the bird unit with the other hand inside the clock):

Put the battery pack back in its original place and reconnect the plug coming from the switch to the location SW :

And reconnect the new bird unit to the location BIRD and screw the battery pack back to its original location.

Pull on the bird to get it out to facilitate the installation of the hooks on the doors:

Hang up the doors by first putting them in the metal hooks:

Then under the window:

Close and open the doors manually to see that everything slides well:

Close the doors:

Replace the batteries:

Check that the cuckoo is activated (it must not to be on OFF):

Place the large needle and press it so that it fits into its housing:

Slowly turn it clockwise until the cuckoo pops out (the needle in this case will not necessarily be on XII, it doesn't matter). Be careful to move the needle more when the cuckoo has sung!

Once the cuckoo has sung (once, logically), remove the big needle gently (without turning it!). Then place the small hand in the direction of one o'clock :

Place the big hand in the direction of XII :

And now, voila ! Your cuckoo clock is reassembled and synchronized with the time!
